Knowledge and conservation of hawksbill turtles in the South Pacific
The IMPACS project (Initiative for the Knowledge and Conservation of Hawksbill Turtles in the South PACific) sets out to build a lasting citizen and scientific effort for the protection of sea turtles, and of hawksbill turtles in particular — an emblematic, threatened species.
The programme runs across two French territories in the South Pacific: Wallis and Futuna, and French Polynesia.
Objectives of the IMPACS project
The project’s main objective is to strengthen scientific and traditional knowledge about sea turtles in these two territories. Several concrete actions are under way to achieve it:
- Collecting and giving value to traditional knowledge about sea turtles;
- Building a citizen science network: running workshops, teaching activities and local training to raise awareness and involve residents;
- Setting up a shared scientific programme between Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia, to harmonise data collection on nesting female green and hawksbill turtles.
